Easy Cheese Straws

Tis the season for all the snacks! My mom and I made a zillion snacks and sweets to nibble on over the last week, and my absolute favorite are cheese straws. This was my first time making them myself and after seeing how easy it was, I have a feeling I’ll be whipping them up all the time. All it takes is piecrust mix, processed cheese spread, and ground red pepper. Usually, you would shape them with a cookie press, but ours is a few decades old and busted as soon as we tried to use it, so we had to improvise and roll and slice them. They aren’t as pretty as usual but were just as delicious 😋

If you’re making them at home, I would highly recommend a cookie press like this one and using the zig-zag shape to make them into little strips. Once you mix the cheese and piecrust mix together, it’s super crumbly, so you have to work it together a bit. The heat from your hands will make everything come together, so don’t panic! Check out the recipe below, and if you want to watch me make them, be sure to check out my Instagram Reel ✌🏻

Matt Lummus Cheese Straws

Ingredients

  • 1 (11 oz.) package piecrust mix

  • 1 (5oz.) jar sharp processed cheese spread (we use the Kraft Old English Spread)

  • 1/2 tsp ground red pepper (1/4 if you don’t want them as spicy, but I like ‘em hot!)

Directions

  • Combine pie crust, cheese, and pepper in a food processor or stand mixer with hook attachment, scraping down sides until combined.

  • Use hands to work together the mixture until it isn’t crumbling. Form it into a log that will fit into your cookie press. Use the bar-shaped disk to make 2-inch strips.

    • If you don’t have a cookie press, you can roll out the dough 1/4 inch thick and use a pizza cutter to cut them into 2-inch strips like the ones I made.

  • Place cheese straws on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees Farenheight for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.

  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
